All About January’s New Moon and What It Means for Your Zodiac Sign

Kicking off the new year of illuminations is January’s new moon, expected to rise on Jan. 11 at 3:57 p.m. PT.

The phase comes just a few weeks before the month’s full moon — nicknamed the Wolf Moon, which is predicted to peak on Jan. 25 — and marks the beginning of the lunar cycle. In contrast to full moon appearances, new moons blend in with the dark night sky.

This is because the moon is in the phase that is not being illuminated by the Sun. However, despite its blacked-out appearance, new moons have just as much astronomical meaning in the cosmic world.

January’s lunation will be a new moon in Capricorn, meaning this Earth sign’s energy is expected to be infused into the cosmos as it aligns with the planets in 2024. Signifying the tenth zodiac sign on the wheel, Capricorn rules society and its structures, ambition, professional goals and authority figures.

Celebrity astrologer Kyle Thomas tells PEOPLE exclusively, “The best way to collectively use its vibration is to brainstorm your career goals for the year and start to take action to push matters in your favor.” He says the new moon “will bring excitement, surprises, and many fresh starts out of nowhere.”

Furthermore, Thomas — who’s known for his cosmic guidance for celebrities, business executives and prominent influencers — predicts, “The situations, plans, and new beginnings launched now will be back on your mind near the full moons of June 22 and July 21.”

Aries (March 21-April 19)

Step up to the professional plate, Aries! Thomas says the energy felt from this new moon will “open a doorway in your life to achieve more” in the coming year, particularly regarding career advancements.

“While promotions, awards, new job offers or favorable recognition could soon arrive,” Thomas says it’s “most important to use this cosmic energy to take the lead and show the world your power.” It’s up to you!

Taurus (April 20-May 20)

It’s time to fly, Taurus! Thomas predicts the new moon will “energize you to switch up your routine and take chances,” despite that urge to stay in your comfort zone. You may even feel “a surge of momentum to look further into the horizon,” he adds.

Thomas says some Tauruses may find their schedules stacked with new “academic, intellectual, legal or media pursuits.” Others, meanwhile, could be planning an “exciting vacation,” he says. Whatever it may be, Thomas says to “trust what calls to your spirit at this time.”

Gemini (May 21-June 20)

Let’s get acquainted, Gemini. Thomas says the new moon “is encouraging you to trust others, be vulnerable in your exchanges and to better learn how to share.” This intimate energy could be “requiring more assistance from partners in business or love,” he says.

Thomas says the new moon could even cause you to consider “applying for more benefits from your job.” Whichever this lunation’s energy calls on you to do, he says “you’ll have the universe stepping in to aid you now” if you speak up and take action.

Cancer (June 21-July 22)

Union will be top of mind now, Cancer. Thomas predicts January’s new moon will “ignite your sense of connection with others,” especially with “partners in business and love.”

Thomas says “commitments could be on the top of your mind” and may cause you to “discuss long-term plans” at this time. While he notes that this would technically be “an ideal time for engagement or marriage,” he advises holding off “until after February.”

This is because “Venus is in retrograde in your partnership sector,” Thomas explains. He says this may “connect you with an ex” or even simply cause “any major promise” to “not work out” in the end.

If you aren’t in a relationship, Cancer, Thomas says singles “could have luck attracting someone with long-term potential at this time.

Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)

It’s time to get busy, Leo! Thomas says January’s new moon will “activate your sector of productivity” both personally and professionally.

“This should increase the pace of life for you as you pick up more projects and responsibilities in life and at work,” he explains. “If out of work, look for a job in the days following this lunation.”

Thomas says this is also “an auspicious time to recharge your fitness, diet and health goals for the year to come.”

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

Spice up your life, Virgo! Thomas says the new moon will “energize you to have more fun, enjoy recreation and let out your sassy side.” He adds, “Romance will be greatly favored as you will certainly be in the mood for love.”

If you’re single, Thomas says there’s a “higher likelihood of finding someone” that fits “their type” — and if they do, he predicts the “passion could be sizzling!”

Thomas says this person could even be “an ex, old flame or someone you have previously met,” though warns, “Just don’t commit or make any major decisions with Venus Retrograde taking place.”

“Creativity and fertility are also greatly favored for you at this time,” he adds.

Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

There’s no place like home, Libra. Thomas says this new moon will have you reconnecting with your roots as it “energizes your sector of home, domesticity and family.”

Thomas says you may now be “considering a move” — or perhaps, want to make a “transition in your living space.” Therefore, he says it’s important to take action now if you want to “show the universe how you want your home to be a kingdom.”

Elsewhere in his prediction, Thomas says “a family situation will likely pop up now.” He says to “focus on growing closer with your kindred and reconnecting to relatives you may not have seen in quite some time.”

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

It’s time to be heard, Scorpio! Thomas predicts January’s lunation will “activate your communication and travel sector, bringing you excitement to broadcast your ideas, learn and see what it looks like out of your current surroundings.”

Elsewhere in his predictions, Thomas says you’ll do “exceptionally well” if you “wish to enroll in a class for the year to come.” However, he adds, it’s only “if you make movement towards it now.”

Sagittarius (Nov. 22 – Dec. 21)

Thomas says this new moon has the potential to make you a “money magnet,” Sagittarius! While a “lucrative check, raise, client or job offer could manifest,” he mentions “you will also need to put yourself out there to uncover every possible financial win.”

Better yet, Thomas says this lunation has the potential to help you “set you’re your financial life for the year to come!” Therefore, he suggests you “assess your budget and find ways to make your wealth grow.”

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

The most important new moon of the year appears for Capricorns now, as it falls in your zodiac sign! Thomas says to use the week that follows this lunation “to take action to build the life of your dreams and put yourself out there.”

“Step into your power, trust your inner motivations and seize the day,” he adds. “You’ll find more luck on your side.”

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

Put yourself first, Aquarius! Thomas says the new moon will energize you to “rest, recharge and relax.”

It will also “encourage you to brainstorm and visualize what you’d like to manifest in the year to come,” he adds. “Start working on some goals that you know will take extra time to come into fruition.”

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20)

Celebrate the good life, Pisces! Thomas says this January moon phase “is a time to connect with friends” both in person and online. “Build your network and socialize amongst your crew.”

Thomas predicts “an exotic and fabulous event could beckon you to attend” in the days following the new moon. “Be sure to attend,” he emphasizes.

Also, Thomas says “to get active on social media as you look to uncover contacts who can open the door to your aspirations.” If single, he suggests trying your hand at online dating as “a hot option” could be “looking your way!”
